Nokia 8 Mpix N86 specs leaked

A new Nokia flagman N86 has 8 Megapixel camera with autofocus, Xenon flash and, obviously, Carl Zeiss lens.

The design of N86 seems to be drawing its roots from both the N97 and the N85, so it’s a handset that looks fairly good.

Even more, the camera comes with a 3rd generation dual-LED flash, a mechanical shutter and the ability to record VGA videos at 30 fps.

The known specs and features of Nokia N86 include:

  • 2.6 inch AMOLED non-touchscreen, scratch-resistant display with (only) 240 x 320 pixels

  • Symbian S60 3rd Edition, FP2
  • Quad bands GSM/EDGE connectivity (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)

A new really smart and extreme smartphone - i-mate 810-f

Not just any old smartphone, the i-mate 810-F could walk into the toughest boozer in town, confident of emerging unscathed several hours later.

i-mate brand new 810-f smartphone

Yes, this is the tough guy of the smartphone world, built to US military standards and able to cope with pressure, heat, water, humidity and even extreme shock without a dip in performance. And just in case you happen to working in extreme climates, the handset is good for a chilly -10°C or a sweltering 60°C, the former quite useful in the current cold snap.

While that no doubt appeals if you happen to be planning a trip up Everest or a an adventure along the Amazon, the majority of us just want to know if it's any good for email and calls. And you know what? It just might be. A Windows Mobile 6.1 device with a 624Mhz PXA processor and high-speed HSDPA connectivity, it offers a full QWERTY keyboard, a 320 × 240 touch screen, 2.2GB of storage, a video-friendly 2 megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, a digital compass and Bluetooth. A specification every bit as solid as its casing.

And if it does happen to let you down, i-mate is offering a lifetime warranty, replacing the 810-F without a quibble. Look out for it in the coming weeks for an as-yet undisclosed price.

iPhone Grabs 28% of U.S. Smartphone Market

iPhone Grabs 28% of U.S. Smartphone Market

iSuppli doesn't categorize the iPhone as a smartphone, but plenty others do. Market research firm Canalys, in fact, does, and says that despite not debuting until the middle of the year, the iPhone is the third largest-selling smartphone in the world, and also has 28% of the U.S. market.

The report says that in Q4 of 2007, Nokia had 52.9% of the worldwide "smart mobile device" market, RIM had 11.4%, and the iPhone had 6.5%. Motorola also had 6.5% of the market, but sold 19,020 fewer phones.

Even more telling is Apple's Q4 2007 share of the U.S. market. The iPhone scored 28% of the market, second to RIM with 41% but far ahead of third place device manufacturer Palm.

Anyone remember when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said about the iPhone when it was introduced?

"There's no chance that the iPhone is going to get any significant market share. No chance."
Uh, huh. Canalys' report also says that combined Windows Mobile smartphones totaled 21% of the U.S. smartphone market in Q4. That's combined. About that insignificant market share, Steve?

Speaking of Steve, Jobs said he wanted 1% market share by the end of 2008. But he was talking about total cell phone market share, not smartphone market share, so the iPhone still has a ways to go. However, it seems likely that Apple may sell the 10 million iPhones they projected by the end of 2008, so Jobs may get his wish.

Samsung i780 smartphone has GPS

Samsung seems to be working a little in reverse with its upcoming SGH-i780 Windows Mobile 6 handset, showing it first at GITEX, then providing shots to media a couple weeks later -- all without an official press release or announcement. Fortunately, we have pretty much all the information we want about it at this point, save for one key detail: will it come to AT&T as the rumored BlackJack 2?

Unlike the original BlackJack, the i780 runs the touchscreen-driven Professional variant of Windows Mobile, features an "optical mouse" on the d-pad that provides the user with an actual on-screen pointer, and features integrated WiFi and GPS. If we were the wagering sort, we'd guess that an AT&T variant of this sucker would lose the WiFi and trade Euro HSDPA radio hardware for its North American equivalent, but with integrated GPS, it still seems like it could be a worthwhile upgrade. Sweden apparently expects it in early 2008, though there's no official word on launches elsewhere just yet.
